After a five month stay in hospital, well-known international artist and poet, David-Baptiste Chirot (birth name, David Harris) began, in the late 1980’s, a new phase in his artistic journey at River View apartments in Milwaukee Wisconsin with artworks, films, writing, only to have it interrupted in early June 2021 by his untimely death. Friends and fellow artists/writers helped piece together this in-memoriam from notebooks, files, loose pages and artworks, salvaged from his apartment, and with works inspired by his art, writings, and their memories of father, brother, friend, artist, writer, poet & visual poet, David-Baptiste Chirot (b.1953 – d.2021).

Songs to Come for the Salamander; Selected Poems 2013-2021:
selected & introduced by Thomas Fink

Sandy Press & Meritage Press, 2021
396 pages
ISBN: 978-1-7368160-4-2
Available through Amazon

Chosen by Thomas Fink from the 29 books of text poetry by Mark Young published since 2013, Songs to Come for the Salamander is a companion piece to the 2008 Pelican Dreaming, also selected & edited by Thomas Fink, & the 600-page 2013 The Codicils, which Young describes as nine books in one. It again highlights the variety, sly humor, & concern for social & political issues that the author is internationally known for. Many of his regular tropes — “A line from . . .,” “Today the Postwo/man,” & geographies are included, but they are only a small part of this delightful sampling from the 2500 or so poems from Young that have appeared in the nine years this selection covers.

“Some readers might assume that particular, highly pessimistic generalizations in Young’s poems are actually Mark Young presenting his sense of doom. The little ditty “democracy” registers the claim that “no-one// knows the/ words to” the “song” (the concept of democracy) even though “every-/ one sings” it, and “since violence is learned” tells us that “tolerance is no/ longer available, is replaced by trauma.” Although nothing in the poems—not even such affirmations of aesthetic transport as “Constant Craving,” which speaks of music “that acts as/ axis to steady everything around”—makes one identify the poet as a bright-eyed optimist, various moments in the work display too much respect for the complexity of cause and effect, limitations of human perception, the transience of trends, and sudden appearances of the unexpected to place sustained credence in large generalizations and foregone conclusions.”

cecil touchon interviewed by pierre gervois

Cecil Touchon was Born in 1956 in Austin, Texas is a contemporary American collage artist, painter, published poet, and theorist living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Co-founder of the International Post-Dogmatist Group, Touchon is director of the group’s Ontological Museum, Founder of the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage, and Construction, and founder of the International Society of Assemblage and Collage Artists. Cecil Touchon is best known for his Typographic Abstraction works that ‘Free the letters from their burden of being bearers of meaning”.

Touchon co-founded the International Post-Dogmatist Group (IPDG) in 1987. Primarily an alternative to a post-modernist view of the world, the group’s writings suggest that creativity and artistic pursuits must be based in a recognition of the spiritual underpinnings of all human activities. The IPDG addresses itself to the art world through a presentation of itself as the ‘official avant-garde’ creating an elaborate bureaucratic structure of outlandish sounding offices through which the various members communicate simulating ‘the establishment’ as a form of parody.

In 2005 an exhibition was held in Cuernavaca, Mexico entitled “Cecil Touchon – Thirty Years of Fluxing Around” in which art works and scores dating as early as 1975 were exhibited showing the fluxus tendency in Touchon’s work over the last thirty years. Touchon has never been formally associated with the Fluxus group until the year 2000 with his participation in the Fluxlist – an email group where the current generation fluxus artists interact and collaborate. In 2002 Touchon, with a number of other artists from the Fluxlist established the Fluxnexus – a group of artists working together on various new Fluxus projects including a new Fluxus performance workbook. In 2006 Touchon established the FluxMuseum in order to assemble and archive samples of works by contemporary 21st Century Fluxus artists. The central focus of the Fluxmuseum has been the creation of Fluxus related publications and curating and mounting international exhibitions of Fluxus art called Fluxhibitions.

jim leftwich’s transmutations of vallejo

Jim Leftwich’s transmutations (not translations) of the poetry of César Vallejo are nothing short of brilliant. They feel more Vallejo in English than any previous translations ever have. Vallejo is certainly, bar none, among the greatest poets of the 20th century. Human, more than immediately human, tortured, both baroque and surreal, and lyrical beyond compare, his poetry defies translation, so difficult does it appear at times. This is especially the case with his early work Trilce (Tres tresss trisss treesss tril trilssss, Leftwich’s title has it). Claimed by the surrealists as a master in that genre, Vallejo is that and more than that, opaque as Góngora or bittersweetly acerbic as Lorca, the complexity of his language and imagery find few parallels. Leftwich has created a Vallejo more Vallejo than Vallejo at times. These transmutations have all the speed, energy and enigmatic beauty of the originals on which they are based. – Ivan Argüelles
